What's New: Windows Phone 7 vs. Data Cards

Reports have surfaced that Windows Phone 7 formats any MicroSD data card inserted into the phone. This is true, but it is not really Microsoft's fault. Microsoft apparently informed phone manufacturers that the new Windows Phone 7 operating system does not support external storage, and if any was added that it would be tied to that device. Phone manufacturers seem to have added MicroSD slots anyway, without warning customers not to use them.

The upshot is that if a card is inserted, the phone will format the card to its proprietary data format. Worse, the phone will then not work unless the card is in the phone. In essence, this is how the system was designed, and manufacturers are not doing a good job of informing customers that the card slot is not supported.
