What's New: Windows 7 Release Date Is October 22

Microsoft confirmed the planned release date of Windows 7 is October 22, and also confirmed some users of Windows Vista will receive a free upgrade. The "Windows 7 Upgrade Option," as it will be called, will allow retailers and PC manufacturers like ITS to offer a special deal for upgrading to Windows 7 after its release. Microsoft has been quiet on the details, but in the past PCs purchased after a certain date will be eligible for the upgrade. At least one IT rumor site that has often been right in the past reports PCs with Vista Home Premium, Vista Business, and Vista Ultimate purchased between June 26, 2009 and January 31, 2010 will be eligible for a free or low cost upgrade, which leaves out Windows Vista Home Basic. We expect users would be offered a "like" upgrade, for example, upgrading Windows Vista Business to Windows 7 Professional.
