What's New: Symantec Focuses On Speed With Norton AntiVirus 2009

Symantec says they have focused on improving speed, lowering memory use, and faster installation times for the newest version of Norton AntiVirus and Norton Internet Security. Increasing complaints prompted the redesign, as many antivirus products snowballed in size as vendors added features such as spyware and pest scanning in recent years. Symantec claims the new products use only about 7 MB of memory, or one tenth that of competing products.

ITS still recommends most users avoid Norton Internet Security. Although recent versions have been better, the product has a history of causing strange behavior (our favorite is the PC which couldn't run Windows Solitaire with Internet Security enabled). Businesses may still be better served by EndPoint Protection, Symantec's "corporate" antivirus product that offers central management and easy license renewals that don't require a credit card and a visit to each PC.
