What's New: Microsoft Gets Into Cloud Computing With Windows Azure

Chief Software Architect Ray Ozzie announced Windows Azure, Microsoft's foray into cloud computing. Windows Azure provides .Net services, SQL Server, SharePoint, Dynamics CRM with storage and network infrastructure to allow companies to host applications in Microsoft data centers. In addition, Live Services will provide for sharing, storing, and synchronizing documents, photos, and files across PCs, phones, applications, and Web sites.

Cloud computing services, such as Windows Azure and Amazon's EC2, are typically billed on a combined per-hour and per-GB-of-data-transfer basis, but let the provider manage the entire infrastructure.
