What's New: Hazards of Hosted Software - Google Apps Outage

Google acknowledges that an undetermined number of Google Apps users and Gmail users were unable to log in yesterday afternoon and overnight. Google says that "a small subset" of users were affected by a "502 Server Error" message when logging in. Google acknowledged the problem around 1:00 pm CDT Wednesday, and pronounced it resolved around 4:00 am Thursday. Reportedly a similar issue affected Gmail users on July 16, according to postings in Google's online discussion forums. The challenge for businesses that pay an annual per-user subscription fee to a hosted solution like Google Apps is that outages outside of their control (for example, Internet access problems by their ISP) can affect their employees' productivity.
