What's New: AMD Plans Four-Core CPU

AMD has announced plans to double the number of CPU cores in its top of the line processors to four, in 2007. In addition to allowing PC manufacturers to make servers with up to 32 CPU cores (8 processors), the new designs will support DDR3 memory, a new socket design, and new security and virtualization technologies from AMD. Virtualization adds support for running multiple operating systems at once to the CPU.
