What's New: Fake Greeting Cards, E-Mail on the Rise

A report from security vendor SurfControl claims the number of malicious e-mails disguised as greeting cards is up 90% over last year. Attackers use these fake e-mails to trick users into installing software on their computers, turning them into zombies. A related technique is to make an e-mail appear to come from a ficticious "technical support" department.

Once attackers use these types of phishing attacks to convince users to access fake web sites, they download software to the computer which turns it into a so-called "zombie," allowing the attacker to use the computer for further attacks, or to send out spam.
