What's New: ASC Is Second Try At Opposing Spyware

The Anti-Spyware Coalition (ASC) Tuesday released a draft definition of spyware that it hopes will promote public comment and ultimately result in users becoming better educated about the dangers of spyware. The previous industry coalition, COAST, fell apart in February after concerns it admitted spyware vendors.

The ASC has also released six major recommendations for users to defend themselves against spyware:

  • keep the security on your computers up to date
  • only download programs from Web sites you trust
  • familiarize yourself with the fine print attached to any downloadable software
  • avoid being tricked into clicking dialog boxes
  • beware of so-called "free" programs
  • use antispyware, antivirus and firewall software
