What's New: Symantec Sues to Stop Windows Vista

Symantec has filed suit, asking to halt development and distribution of Windows Vista claiming Microsoft has wrongly included its technology in Windows. Symantec, which recently purchased backup king Vertias, says Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, and Vista all include Veritas technology.

In 1996 Veritas and Microsoft agreed that Microsoft could include volume management technology in Windows NT (Windows 2000, XP, and later versions of Windows are all based on Windows NT). Symantec also claims Microsoft was wrongly granted patents based on its technology, and wants to have those patents transferred to Symantec. Reportedly Veritas/Symantec has been working to resolve this dispute with Microsoft since 2004. Microsoft claims they purchased the intellectual propertly rights in 2004, but Symantec claims the original agreement prohibits Microsoft from developing competing technologies.
