Why does my PC lose time?

Computers can "lose time" for many reasons, involving both hardware and software. For instance, every PC has a battery which maintains the clock and computer settings. Sometimes if this battery is old and is running out of power, the PC can lose time while it is turned off.

Software can also cause internal timing problems which will make clocks appear to lose time. Microsoft has documented that sometimes even the screensavers that come with
Windows can cause a PC to lose time.
