Introducing Microsoft Copilot

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is the next big thing in computing. So much so that Microsoft has rolled out a free version and is starting to integrate it into various apps, even Notepad. A paid version is also available via Microsoft 365.

To start using Copilot, search for "Copilot" in your Windows 11 logo (a.k.a. "Start") menu. This should find the rainbow-colored Copilot app icon. Microsoft 365 subscribers may also see a Microsoft 365 Copilot app icon, with more advanced capabilities.

In the "personal" Copilot you'll see a few "starting" prompts such as "write a first draft" or "practice a language." It will also default to "Quick Response" for fast answers, as opposed to "Think Deeper." You can then ask it questions, like a search engine, but then can refine the answers with more questions.

For instance, if I ask, "What is The ITS Connection?" it will display a short summary and offer links to our web site and to subscribe. It also offers prompt suggestions such as, "What kind of articles are featured in The ITS Connection?" which pulls up a handful of article titles.

If I give it a prompt of "rewrite this email: I don't like your idea" then it responds:

Of course! Here's a more professional and constructive way to express that:

Subject: Feedback on Your Idea

Hi [Recipient's Name],

I appreciate you sharing your idea. After considering it, I don’t think it aligns with what we’re looking for at the moment. I’d love to explore other approaches—perhaps we can brainstorm together to find an alternative that works for both of us.

Looking forward to discussing further.

Best,
[Your Name]

You can see how Copilot is more than a search engine. Here are a few more prompt ideas:

  • How do I save a file as a PDF?
  • Draft an outline for a training document for professionals learning to manage their team.
  • Draft an email for an invitation to a company party. Keep the tone formal.
  • How can I find the largest file on my hard drive?
  • Rewrite this paragraph to improve clarity: [text]
  • Explain how solar power works like I was a teenager.
  • I want to buy a new microwave for between $600 and $800. Make a table of the best options including pros and cons.
