A day after announcing a limited time half price upgrade offer for existing customers, Microsoft released details of the Windows 7 Upgrade Option Program to provide free upgrades for new PC purchases. The offer applies to purchases of a new Windows Vista PC between June 26, 2009, and January 31, 2010. Customers will receive a "like" edition of Windows 7 (e.g., Home Premium for Vista Home Premium) some time after it is released on October 22. Shipping dates and costs will vary with the PC manufacturer.
By starting the upgrade program early, Microsoft hopes to capture PC sales for the back-to-school season.
