Here is a list of changes to the support documents to reflect the differences between UNIX and Windows 2003 hosting plans.

Web Hosting Basics

Usage Statistics
MKStats and Analog are not offered on Windows 2000. Users can use Urchin or a third party program if desired.

Uploading Files (FTP)
Windows 2000 uses a "cgi-bin" directory, not a "cgi-local" directory.
On Windows 2003, IIS will look for a "home page" in this order: default.asp, default.htm, index.htm, index.html
Filenames on Windows 2000 are not case sensitive.
Upload your files to the /webroot directory if using an FTP client.

Imagemaps
Server side imagemaps on Windows 2003 are only supported through the use of FrontPage.

Server Side Includes
#echo date commands do not include the time, unless #config timeframe="time options" is used first.
#fsize does not return the "k".
Windows 2000 will parse files ending in: .shtml  .shtm  .stm

Password Protection
This is a UNIX only feature.

E-mail

Mail Forwarding
No changes.

Autoresponders
No changes.

Form-Email Script
This feature is Unix only. Windows 2000 users can use ASPMail.

Mail form generator
Not available on Windows 2000.

Multimedia

RealAudio & RealVideo
Real System G2 is not supported on Windows 2000 hosting plans. Use Windows Media Services instead.

TrueSpeech
Not available on Windows 2000.

Midi
No changes.

Supported Mime Types
We will be creating a separate link which lists Windows 2000 supported MIME types.

Advanced Features

All of these features are Unix only. Windows 2000 customers would need to download scripts manually from Matt's Script Archive, modify a few settings, and upload to cgi-bin directory on Windows 2000.

CGI Scripts / Programming

Writing CGI scripts
No shell scripts on Windows 2003.
Windows 2003 uses "cgi-bin", not "cgi-local".
The sendmail and date command path references are Unix only.
Users must compile their own scripts.
The following are supported: ASP, PERL, C, C++, and Visual Basic.

Server Independent Code
No changes.

Setting File Permissions
Windows 2003 customers cannot change file permissions.

Installed Perl Modules

Windows Server 2003 Specific Documents

Special Windows 2003 directories:

  • /CGI-BIN/  --This directory should be used for CGI scripts such as Perl.
  • /DATA/  --This directory should be used for files that need to be written to. (read this!)
  • /ANONYMOUS/  --Files placed in this directory will be available via Anonymous FTP (if enabled)
