Can I turn off the balloon popups telling me new updates are ready?

You can, but we suggest you install the updates instead. To disable the Windows Update alerts, open your Control Panel and find the System icon (it may be under "Performance and Maintenance" if you have the Category view enabled). Open System, and click the "Automatic Updates" tab to see your options.
