Note: this page applies to old account types we no longer offer. We have left it up since it may be helpful for someone, since they get a decent amount of search traffic. All current hosting plans with a control panel use Plesk.

If you are an ITS client please contact us for assistance for your account.

Your hosting account's MX record specifies how mail addressed to your domain is to be handled. By default, such mail is handled by our mail servers and distributed according to your E-mail Settings. Some users may wish to have mail handled by a remote mail server. In such instances, the MX record can be changed such that all mail addressed to your domain is redirected to the remote server. (We will remain the primary host of the domain but redirect e-mail to your remote server.)

You can change your MX record yourself using our Zone File Editor. If you are unfamiliar with zone files, we can do this for you for a fee of $25. In order to have ITS update the MX record for a specific account, please send the following information to ITS Technical Support:

(All items required)

1. Domain Name: The domain name of account whose MX record is to be updated.
2. IP Address:
(remote mail server)
Do NOT enter the IP address of your account!
3. Machine Name: (remote mail server) If you are unable to provide us with the machine name of the remote mail server, we will need to set up a machine name for you which can be used to point to the remote IP address (ie.  mail.yourdomain.com).
4. E-mail Address: A confirmation will be sent to this address.

**IMPORTANT**

When a new hosting account is activated we automatically set up a zone file for that account. The zone file will have default settings similar to this:

@ IN SOA ns.nameservers.net. hostmaster.rapidsite.net. (
1999062909
86400
3600
604800
345600 )
domain.net. IN NS ns.nameservers.net.
domain.net. IN NS ns2.nameservers.net.
domain.net. IN NS ns3.nameservers.net.
domain.net. IN MX 50 mail-fwd.mx.rapidsite.net.
www.domain.net. IN MX 50 mail-fwd.mx.rapidsite.net.
domain.net. IN A 209.238.189.162
ftp.domain.net. IN A 209.238.189.162
www.domain.net. IN A 209.238.189.162
smtp.domain.net. IN A 209.238.189.162

As you can see, by default, e-mail will be sent through our mail exchanger (MX). Once the domain is propagated and points to our DNS, e-mail will then be routed according to the zone file on our system -- it does not matter what MX or A records you had setup at your previous hosting company! If you have existing MX or A record changes, you must submit a request for zone file change to Technical Support after placing the order, or make the required changes using your account control panel. While the domain is propagating to our DNS the new zone changes should be propagating as well.

To prevent possible interruptions of service when transferring a domain to ITS we recommend that MX or A record changes be completed before the domain name is actually transferred to our service.
