Note: this page applies to old account types we no longer offer. We have left it up since it may be helpful for someone, since they get a decent amount of search traffic. All current hosting plans with a control panel use Plesk.

What is the Domain Manager?

The Domain Manager is a tool that will assist you with registering and organizing your domain name(s). From the Domain Manager, you can:

  • Register additional domain names to your account
  • Edit pointers
  • Edit domain name server information
  • Change domain name ownership
  • Change contact information
  • Renew or non-renew a domain name

How do I Register a Domain Name?

If you have a name in mind that you would like to register:

  1. Ensure the domain name is available

Note: A TLD is used to identify the type of domain that you are registering. For example, a .com TLD is used to identify commercial or business-related Web sites. The .net TLD is used for Web sites that serve primarily as networks where site visitors can get information about a specific topic (for example, www.eaststlouissurvivors.net). Likewise, a .org TLD is usually used by organizations that deal with a specific, often non-profit, issue (for example, www.worldbirdfund.org).

What is a Parked Domain Name?

A Parked Domain is a active domain reserved for later use or one that points to another existing domain.

For example, the domain name for your hosting account is "domain.com" and you also have registered "domain.net" through your domain.com Domain Manager. You may point domain.net to the domain.com IP address, using a Rapid Domain account. Internet users can now access your Web site using either domain name.

For information about parking a domain, go to How do I Register a Domain Name?

How do I edit the NAMESERVER information for my domain?

Editing the primary and secondary name server information is the process by which you can "point" your domain name to a set of name servers, which could be ITS's name servers or those of another web hosting company that you may choose. The name servers will house the Zone Files for your domain name. The Zone Files tell the world to which server your domain points. This feature only applies to domain names originally registered through ITS for Standard Hosting plans.

To edit Domain Name Server information, perform the following steps:

The following steps assume that you have accessed the Control Panel for the domain name to be edited.

  1. From the Control Panel , click on Edit Account Information. In the Edit Information screen, click on Domain Manager . You may be prompted to log in.
  2. Locate the domain name to be edited, click Edit DNS.

In this example, 1demodomainname.com will be edited.

If you do not find the domain name to be edited on the initial screen, click Last 10 or Next 10 to navigate to the desired domain name . Also check the "Client Search" link at the bottom of your (EAI) Edit Account Information screen, it will bring you into a list of all of your accounts. You can then click on the ID, which will take you into the EAI screen and the domain manager for that account. You can make your modifications there.

  1. In the NameServer 1 and NameServer 2 boxes, enter the new name server machine names. Click Save.

The IP addresses of the name server machine names are not needed.

Please allow a minimum of 24 hours for the changes to propagate.

Propagation is the time it takes for all Internet Service Providers to update their internal systems with newly-edited information. Propagation is not controlled by ITS.

How do I change the Contact Information on a Domain in the Domain Manager?

To change contact information for your domain name, perform the following steps:

The following steps assume that you have accessed your Control Panel.

  1. From the Control Panel, click on Edit Account Information. In the Edit Information screen, click on Domain Manager. You may be prompted to log in.
  2. Locate the domain name to be edited, click Edit Contact Info

In this example, 1demodomainname.com will be edited.

Only the Organizational Details physical address information, Administrative Contact , and Technical Contact catagories can be edited within the Domain Manager. If you want to change your Billing Contact information, go to How do I change my Billing Contact?

If you do not find the domain name to be edited on the domain manager screen, click Last 10 or Next 10 to navigate to the desired domain name. Also check the "Client Search" link at the bottom of your (EAI) Edit Account Information screen, it will bring you into a list of all of your accounts. You can then click on the ID, which will take you into the EAI screen and the domain manager for that account. You can make your modifications there.

  1. Select the contact category to be changed, and edit the desired information box(es), click Save . All information, with the exception of the Fax boxes, must be completed.

Note: You cannot edit the information contained under Organizational Details in the Organizational Details box. If you want to change your Organizational Details , go to How do I change my Organizational Details?

Please allow a minimum of 24 hours for the updates to the Whois databases to take effect.

How do I change my Billing Contact?

In order to change the Billing Contact for a domain name, send a fax request to 630-420-2771, on company letterhead, if applicable, containing the following information:

  • Copy of Driver's License
  • Last four digits of the credit card number on file that was used to register your domain name with ITS
  • Contact e-mail address on file with ITS
  • Domain Name
  • New information required

Once the information has been reviewed for accuracy, it will be updated, and the contact e-mail address notified. If any of the information supplied does not coincide with the domain name in question, such as an incorrect listing of the last four digits of the credit card number used to register the domain name, your request will be declined for security reasons.

How do I change my Organizational Details?

Organizational Details (Registrant Name) are normally changed under two conditions:

  • Release of a domain name to a new owner, or
  • Change of Organizational Name, but the domain name is still owned by the same or a related company or individual.

If you are releasing a domain name to a new owner, send us an e-mail message from the listed Administrative Contact e-mail address as found in the Whois database for that domain name. Send your e-mail message to domreg@teamITS.net. Be sure that the domain name in question is in the "Subject" line of your e-mail message. Directions will be sent to you in an auto-reply message. Note that if you request such a change from an e-mail address that is not listed as part of the Administrative contact, your request will be declined. So, be sure to send your message from the correct e-mail address. If you need to update the e-mail address prior to requesting the information, please see How do I change Contact information, by using the Domain Manager?

If you are simply editing the current Registrant Name , (for example, from your name to your company's name), please send a fax request to 630-420-2771, on company letterhead, if applicable, containing the following information:

  • Copy of Driver's License
  • Last four digits of the credit card number on file that was used to register your domain name with Verio
  • Contact e-mail address on file with Verio
  • Domain Name
  • New Registrant information (company name or individual)

Once the information has been reviewed for accuracy, it will be updated, and the contact e-mail address notified. If any of the information supplied does not coincide with the domain name in question, such as an incorrect listing of the last four digits of the credit card number used to register the domain name, your request will be declined for security reasons.

How do I renew a Domain?
All domain names originally registered with MELBOURNE IT using ITS's Registration Services renew automatically one day prior to the registry expiration date
. This is done to ensure your domain name does not expire unless you instruct ITS otherwise via email.

If your domain name expires, you have up to 7 days after the expiration date to renew your domain name at ITS's discounted rate. Failure to renew on time may cause your domain name to be deactivated for use on the Internet and released for registration by another party. All renewals are nonrefundable in part or in whole.

You cannot go directly to the Registrar, MELBOURNE IT, to renew your domain name. ITS will always be your direct contact for any domain names registered through our services.

What is "Domain Name Redemption Period" and what does it mean?

Recently, the VeriSign registry released a new policy and process to assist registrars with restoring .com and .net domain names that are either accidentally or fraudulently deleted. Below are some details regarding this new policy:

  1. Domain names queued for cancellation (actual Delete request submitted to the Registrar) within the first 5 days of the initial registration will be set for deletion and will be made available for re-registration immediately (No Change).
  2. Domain names queued for cancellation (actual Delete request submitted to the Registrar) outside of the first 5 days will be held for 10 days before a deletion request is sent to the Registry. This helps the Registrant to reclaim domain names with minimal fuss and expense.
  3. Domain names that do not renew (meaning they have expired without a Delete request) will remain manageable through the Domain Manager for 14 days after the expiration date. If the domain name is not renewed by day 15 after expiration, the domain name will be rendered unmanageable in the Domain Manager. Additionally, the Registrar places the domain name in a Registrar-Lock status (status prior to Redemption Period) for a period of approximately 15 days. If a renewal does not take place by day 30 after expiration, the Registrar will send a Delete request to the Registry. The Registry will then place the domain name in the Redemption Period status for 30 days.

Previously, .com or .net domain names falling into the category described in Point 2 above were held by the Registry for a further 5 days and then released.

The administrative contact listed in the Whois would be advised of both the expiration and deactivation (Registrar-Lock status) by the Registrar described in Point 3.

The new process prescribed by the Registry, however, stipulates that when a .com or .net domain name is queued for cancellation (actual Delete request submitted to the Registrar) outside of the first 5 days of registration or when day 30 after the expiration date has been reached, it will now be placed immediately on Redemption Period status for 30 days. During this 30-day period, a domain name may be reinstated to the Registrar and the original Registrant, provided the Registrar (not ITS) adheres to the Registry Process of restoration.

Some additional restrictions and information include:

  • All other domain name requests will fail if the domain name is in the "Redemption Period" status.
  • The modification or deletion of a name server whose parent domain name is on "Redemption Period" status will also fail.
  • If a domain name is not restored within the 30 days, the domain name is held for an additional 5 days and then subsequently deleted and released back into the public arena.
  • The applicable Registry operator, such as VeriSign, will not publish domain names on "Redemption Period" status to the zone file.

Restoring a Domain Name
As domain names in a Redemption Period status are no longer manageable through an RapidSite Domain Manager tool, restoring a domain name in this status should take place directly with the Registrar. Our partner registrar is MelbourneIT, http://www.melbourneit.com.au/

Please do not contact RapidSite for assistance regarding recovering domain names that are in "Redemption Period" status.

When a domain name is initiated for reinstatement, the status changes from "Redemption Period" to "Pending Restore." The "Pending Restore" status is current for a period of 7 calendar days and is initiated by the current Registrar. If the Registry (VeriSign) then approves the restoration of the domain name to the original Registrant, the domain name's original contact information, name servers and Registrant details are populated back into the Whois database. The domain name status will then be set to "Active."

Fees
Fees are involved with the above-mentioned process. To determine the fees for restoring a domain name, please contact the Registrar of the domain name (not ITS).

How do I Non-renew a Domain Name?

Note: If you need to make any changes to the domain name, please do so before you set the domain name to forego renewal. After setting a domain name to non-renew, changes cannot be made to the domain name and it will be removed from the Domain Manager tool.

To non-renew your domain name, please contact ITS in writing one week before the renewal date to request the domain name not be automatically renewed.

If the domain name selected is the only domain name on a Web hosting account, the non-renewal of the domain name does not constitute the non-renewal of the Web hosting account. Domain names are separately billed from Web hosting accounts. The reverse also applies. If you cancel a Web hosting account that has one or more domain name registrations attached, this will not constitute the non-renewal of your domain names.

The non-renewal of a domain name is a 30-day process. If your domain name is not renewed, you will receive an Expiration Notice from our Registrar, MELBOURNE IT, one day after the expiration date. This notice is a reminder advising you the domain name has expired, and that you still have time to renew through ITS at discounted prices should you change your mind.

Prior to the release of the domain name for others to register, you will receive a Deactivation Notice. This notice is sent as a reminder that the domain name will be deactivated unless renewal action is taken. If you do decide to renew at this point, you cannot do so through ITS. The Deactivation Notice means the domain name has been removed from our partner's system and the domain name has been rendered inactive on the Internet, and it can only be renewed at MELBOURNE IT where you will then be charged at retail prices.

How do I change my Registrar to ITS, from another Registry?

ITS can now accept domain name registration transfers for a one time transfer fee and a very reasonable renewal rate.

How do I cancel a Domain Name?

To non-renew your domain name prior to the expiration date, read How do I Non-Renew a Domain Name?
