The "SuperSpeed" USB Promotions Group announced this week its intention to have USB 3.0 widely available by 2010. The goals of the group are to run USB 3.0 at ten times the current USB 2.0 speed, or 4.8 Gbps vs. 480 Mbps, all with lower power consumption. That would transfer a 27GB HD movie in 70 seconds as opposed to 15 minutes with current technology.
The group expects USB 3.0 to be finalized by mid-2008, with devices beginning to appear by late 2009.
