Samsung has announced it plans to double the capacity of its solid state disk drive to 64GB by the end of the second quarter of this year. The drive will be in a 1.8-inch format, intended for laptops and other portable devices. With no moving parts, solid state disk drives promise near-hard-disk performance with much lower power usage and noise. Samsung believes its sales for these drives will increase from 2.2 million units in 2006 to 173 million in 2007, and 9 billion drives by 2010.
