Taiwan's Acer Inc. will spend $710 million to acquire Gateway, the #4 PC manufacturer in the U.S. With the acquisition Acer would become the #3 PC manufacturer in the world and gain access to Gateway's retail stores. The two expect to save $150 million annually from avoiding duplication of costs and gaining greater negotiating power for parts.
