What's New: AMD Launches Quad-Core CPUs

AMD released nine versions of the Opteron quad-core server CPUs this week in a bid to regain market share from Intel. While Intel was first to market with a quad-core CPU, which puts four CPUs on one piece of silicon, AMD's technology has been widely regarded as superior. For example each of the four CPU cores has its own power regulator, allowing the CPU to selectively slow cores down to save power when not in use. The new CPU also includes a memory controller hub and high-speed HyperTransport links.

AMD says one 2GHz quad-core Opteron will perform 79 percent faster than a 3GHz dual-core Opteron.
